Experience & qualifications:

5 GCSEs or equivalent grade 9-5 (A*-C) including Maths and English Language (not Literature).
Must have/be predicted 96 UCAS points from your top 3 A level’s.
Must have 3 A-level’s at CCC (or above) including Maths and an additional STEM subject.

Achieve your career goals on our apprentice programme

On our 5 year programme you’ll receive tailored on-the-job training from industry experts from day one combined with early responsibility to help you to develop and progress.

You’ll be working towards a Bachelor of Engineering degree (BEng) in Professional Engineering (Science Industry Process & Plant Engineer). This programme is taught through block based or blended distance learning.

If you are offered a role; you will have a buddy or a mentor who will help you to prepare for joining GSK and will be there to offer support and guidance throughout your apprenticeship.

Working with both your line and programme manager we want to identify the right opportunities to help you succeed in the short term and throughout your career with us.

What will you do?

You will be part of one of our Research and Development (R&D) teams. You will be within the Clinical Supply Chain Validation and Engineering team, based at our Ware R&D site which is the heart of innovation, discovering and developing differentiated, high-quality and needed medicines that are bringing transformational benefit to patients.

The role provides engineering expertise within the Ware Pilot Plant to ensure capability to supply material for clinical trials and to support the development of new drug products.

Your duties might include:

  • Support projects and initiatives to introduce new process equipment, support plant modifications and new processing capability, working with customers to understand requirements and delivering new capability.
  • Support Process and Maintenance Engineering in continuous improvement activities through extended asset life, process capability enhancement and energy reduction.
  • Ensure that key safety systems are maintained in full working order. Lead or support engineering safety work such as Machinery Safety, Process Safety, compliance with Global Engineering Standards (GES) and Permit to Work system. Comply with EHS policy, management system and procedures relating to engineering and facilities.
  • Support quality investigations and implement subsequent identified improvements.
  • Develop process understanding to improve on simplification and robustness of manufacturing and development activities.
  • Support Pilot Plant sustainability improvement works through identifying facility and operational efficiencies and capital project investment.

On successful completion of the apprenticeship, it is possible to secure a permanent role in GSK and continue to contribute to our mission. Potential roles within the Clinical Supply Chain group could be:

  • Process Engineer – Broadly similar to the role described above
  • Platform Engineer – Specific unit operation focussed role requiring a deep understanding of relevant equipment function.
  • Manufacturing Scientist – Production role supporting drug manufacture for clinical supply and support of development production.

You’ll be excited by the thought of:

  • Learning how drug products including tablets, capsules and inhaled devices are made
  • Supporting the introduction of the latest technology manufacturing and testing equipment and facilities
  • Learning new concepts such as:
    • How manufacturing processes are controlled to ensure product quality and efficacy
    • How equipment and processes are controlled to ensure staff are safe as they work
    • How drug products are developed from small lab scale through to full production scale
  • A stimulating work environment with people from various STEM backgrounds
  • Studying towards your Bachelor of Engineering degree (BEng) in Professional Engineering (Science Industry Process & Plant Engineer).
