STEM Medley

I’m Jiya and I am currently in year 10. I started STEM Medley in October 2021 as a way to encourage today’s youth into STEM. When my mother moved to the UK, she found herself unaware of her future career. In India she studied engineering, however, she didn’t have access to any career advice. The confusion consumed her and she had to change careers. Even though STEM Medley is targeted at a younger demographic it can be beneficial for people like my mother. STEM Medley would showcase people from various STEM careers speaking about their experiences and advice (in video format). There would be access to an online counsellor, to give extra guidance for those still unsure. I believe it is important to give an individual specific and relevant advice. There would be a description of the pathways to those jobs as young people are often not aware of alternative pathways to a certain job. Unfortunately, most people would not have access to viable career advice. Schools in the UK are responsible for providing career guidance, without any additional funds. They aren’t required to provide opportunities for work-based learning. Hence, teens are attaining significantly different career advice. For others around the world STEM Medley would feature other language options. Giving people a chance to make an informed decision about their future careers by allowing them to gain a realistic view. The future economy is reliant on STEM careers because the workforce is projected to grow by 16% from 2020 to 2030. That means that today’s youth will be filling in those gaps! Women and ethnic minorities are underrepresented in STEM. The share of women working in computer science is smaller today (25%) than in 1990 (32%). STEM Medley will be the perfect place for the encouragement!
STEM Medley is an online resource with its mission to make STEM career advice accessible for people globally.
